How to Play:
In Discrete Math Pre-Collegiate Games, Kris Siy describes the rules as follows:
Half a Checkerboard: Two players play the following game on a checkerboard: Four dots are placed on an eight-row checkerboard, one in each of the first four columns. (Dots may start in any row, and do not need to start on the same row.) On each player’s turn, they must move one, two, three, or all four dots one square downward. The player who cannot make a move loses.
